UNIVERSAL RHYTHM BLASTERS AT WORK by Georg Edlinger
To top
What do Tom Waits, Aphex Twin, Tinariwen and Portishead have in common?
Every one of them is an elementary inspiration for Georg Edlinger's Rhythm Blasters at Work - “Windfire”.
The new CD is a perfect mix of electicism and authenticity. A new form of sophisticated mainstream. It is a statement from a versatile and great artist. This music grooves, swings and creates images full of atmosphere and overwhelming plasticity. It is the perfect tune to get out of bed in the morning or to just chill out.
The Album describes a fantastic journey of a so called “Sailor” through the real world.
With somnabulistic security Georg Edlinger holds the steering wheel in one hand while the sticks explode through pure energy in the other. The “sailor” travels from “African Steps”, “Fall Light”, “Turning Motion” to “Space Fly” before he regains solid floor under his dancing feet with “Sky Trip”.
After this rhythmic, vibrating and melodic trip the imaginative thoughts move to “Crashdown” and “Returning Move”. After that they rotate to “Eastside”, to end in a fulminant “Windfire”, which the CD is named after.
Georg Edlinger also got the brilliant producers Harry Jen, Errol Dix and A. Eicher on board. In almost two years they created a clubready Independence Album with Edlinger's own compositions an lyrics. Universal Rhythm Blasters at Work - “Windfire” also features the artists Louis Sanou, Dog G., Nwanma, T. Pichler and V. Kaegerer. After several CD releases Georg Edlinger sails as an author, lecturer, musician, endorser, drummer and percussionist in various formations into the “Windfire”. With this he presents a Pop Album that is ready for the radio and wanders along stylistic borders. Ahoy!

Marcel van Cleef first solo-album „Traffic Jam“
To top
Van Cleef reaches an absolute milestone in his musical career. He redefines the broad spectrum possibilities of the usage of percussion and through his well developed way of playing, he reaches an unprecedented height.
Traffic Jam is a splendid solo project. A just as fascinating as overwhelming musical product.
Marcel van Cleef is an extraordinary appearance in the world of music. At two years of age he picks up his first drumsticks: it was the beginning of an amazing musical career. At the age of 12 he made his appearance into the local music scene. Long before graduation from the Conservatory, he shared the stage with internationally acclaimed artists.
He finds himself in great need to add harmonics on top of the rhythmic component, so he is constantly in search of new sounds, roaming the world, to integrate harmonic structures in his rhythmical work. He combines percussion and pulsatile instruments: the result is the creation of an unprecedented versatility of sounds which at the same time enables him to sound like a four headed band while playing solo.
Using 8 foot pedals, which themselves trigger 2 bass-drums, 2 djembés, a woodblock and 2 hi-hats, he creates the base rhythm fundament of fine drum sounds. His arms handle tom-toms, djembés, congas, cymbals, udu, cajón, tambora and hangs. Combining these elements he delivers a set of raw and refined emotions and rattling fireworks. On the top of it all sound his comforting vocals. Van Cleef excels in making extremely complex arrangements sound open, fresh, and at times surprisingly simple. He adds an irresistible sense of humor to it.
It is almost beyond comprehension that the compositions on Traffic Jam are written and produces by just one man, the same man that performs solo live on stage. It is melodically sublime and rhythmically virtuos. Marcel van Cleef redefines the art of playing drums.
Van Cleef spatters energy and peaking musicality. His performances are impressive and touching; an ultimate challenge, a musical pinnacle and a tremendous source of inspiration to everyone who hears or sees him. Traffic Jam is a splendid solo project and a fascinating show: Brilliant!
Marcel van Cleef. Rising star. Solid performance. Raw emotion. The story of an extraordinary dutch drummer on the road to success. It has taken over 2000 performances with rock groups, big bands, jazz trios, cooperations with well known musicians from America, Africa and Europe, loads of demos and clinics, CDs, DVDs, now Marcel van Cleef delivers with his new CD „Traffic Jam“ a work which is indusputably original and inspiring.

Neuer Schlagwerk Endorser Bodek Janke live with Lena Meyer-Landrut
To top
His CV takes your breath away.
At the tender age of 11 he took drum lessons at the Baden conservatory.
His talent was fostered by additional saxophone and jazz vibraphone lessons. Over the years that followed he travelled and studied extensively, studying at the Cologne conservatory and then pursuing postgraduate studies at City College New York, where he gained a Master of Arts degree.
He also travelled to Kolkata in India where he studied composition and arrangement, before studying Brazilian and Afro-Cuban percussion under Alfonso Garrido.
Naturally, the travelling musician did not remain undiscovered for long, receiving various grants and numerous prizes over the years.
At just 14 he received a grant for talented individuals, and this was followed by a scholarship from both the DAAD [German Academic Exchange Service] to study in New York and from the GVL [German Society for Performance Rights] for a music project overseas.
He has won many awards for music; twice receiving first prize in Jugend jazzt, not to mention the Baden Wurttemberg jazz prize, the German Record Critics Award and most recently the Maritim Solistenpries at the Neuen Deutschen Jazzpreis.
But it is not because of his trophies that Bodek is so popular and sought after as both a live and studio musician.
He is incredibly adept in his playing and is very responsive to any musicians he is playing with. He swiftly wins over both the hearts of his fellow musicians and the audience through his sensitivity and finesse.
He has been playing Schlagwerk instruments for years and his work with Schlagwerk is borne of this conviction.
Thanks to Roland Peil, Schlagwerk endorser and percussionist with Die Fantastischen Vier, who introduced Bodek Janke to us, we can now count Bodek amongst our endorsers.
We look forward to a long and happy working relationship.

confluence - a successful collaboration
To top
Confluence, the new collaboration between Akram Khan and Nitin Sawhney, makes a welcome return to Sadler's Wells following its sell-out run at their Svapnagata India Festival in Autumn 2009.
The highly acclaimed Confluence fuses Sawhney's music with Khan's unique blend of classical kathak and contemporary technique. Exploring how the independent stories of these two kindred spirits converged, Confluence offers the opportunity to re-visit their collaborative work together (Kaash, zero degrees and bahok) but it is more than simply a retrospective of their previous pieces. It is an exploration of the nature and fabric of creativity itself.

"These are performers at the zenith of their powers, truly original creators of dance and sounds that mix all kinds of influences…The result is work so powerful and idiosyncratic that it sweeps you away"

summer music workshops in alsace
To top
The 1st European Blues & Roots Masterclass took place with Steve Baker, Dick Bird and Martin Roettger in Le Kleebach in summer 2009. A total of 30 students attended and spent five days and nights celebrating the joy of hand-made music in a perfect location. The beautiful surroundings, excellent accomodation, delicious food and affordable prices in conjunction with exceptionally musician-friendly conditions offered an ideal setting for the event and led to numerous requests for a sequel in 2010, with which we were happy to comply.
Hand-made music is something which never goes out of style and this year’s event offers amateur musicians of all ages and levels of ability four full days of of intensive study with three of today’s leading exponents of this genre. Steve Baker, Dave Goodman and Martin Röttger have been performing professionally for decades and all have extensive teaching experience. The courses combine practical and theoretical instruction with ample opportunity for sessions in the evenings. The event will culminate in a full evening concert featuring all three instructors on Saturday, August 7th.

Martin Röttger & Sanna Hallmann - Cajon:
The original Beatbox!
Martin Röttger
During the past five years Martin Röttger has made a significant contribution to the rapidly growing popularity of the cajon on the European music scene, taking it into new places and moving outside the traditional area of flamenco. Originally a drummer, his cajon playing is characterized by grooving rhythms and infectious energy and has inspired numerous others to take up the instrument. In the late 1990s he founded the drum and cajon school “Drummatic” in Hamburg and has since taught at various other musical education institutes including the renowned Dante Augustin School in Switzerland. Today he is very active as a workshop instructor, presenting the first ever cajon courses at the Schorndorf Guitar Days and the Mediterranean Music School and has written several instructional books as well as working as a studio musician and performing live all over Europe. He cooperates closely with leading cajon manufacturer Schlagwerk and is also an endorsee for Sonor, Paiste and Beyerdynamic.
Sanne Hallmann
This year’s cajon course will include a special optional feature on the first day: Under the guidance of Susanna Hallmann, an experienced and highly motivating instructor who has given cajon building classes in numerous music schools, students will have the opportunity to build their own cajon in only one day, before learning the instrument with Martin Röttger. For those who already own a cajon, Martin will offer a parallel workshop on the history of the instrument, different types of cajon and the possibilities of augmenting it with other percussion instruments.
Thereafter, the course will reflect the fact that the cajon has come to be regarded as an instrument in its own right and is now an essential part of the arsenal of any drummer or percussionist. Nowadays it is often used instead of a regular drum set and is ideal for small line-ups and club concerts. The modern cajon offers the player the possibility of adapting drum kit grooves to a quieter and more compact medium which reflects the realities of performance today.
Course Outline
The basic strokes on the cajon: Tone, bass, slap, tap
Fundamental exercises
Commonly used techniques
Various rhythms for large percussion groups
Drum grooves and how to adapt them for the cajon
Working with playalongs
How to set up and tune the cajon
Microphoning the cajon
Course language: German, English if required
Musical requirements:
Students of all levels are welcome

Rhythm, visual effects, creativity, dancing, singing, activity and artists with incredible skills – that’s the language the new Mayumana show MOMENTUM is based on.
Performed for the first time in Madrid in winter 2008, the newest show from the renowned Mayumana House in Tel Aviv is now on world tour. So far, Mayumana has thrilled more than 5 million audience members with its shows. And Momentum is getting ready to increase this group of fans. Among other things, lots of inspiring rhythmic elements to delight the audience have been added to the show. In order to do so, a whole range of Schlagwerk Cajons and percussion instruments are put to use.
Because so much movement and variety place high demands on the instruments, along with the sound, special value has been placed on the sturdiness and stage potential of the instruments. All together, 14x Cajons 2inOne (CP 404) and 2x Booster Boxxes are used on stage by the artists.
The cooperation between the Mayumana House and Schlagwerk Percussion in the selection of the right instruments is a great example for the show’s work across
borders. Mayumana represents art with no boundaries, creative freedom and the
love of life.
Schlagwerk Percussion would like to say thank you for the fabulous collaboration.

Since its launch at the Frankfurt Music Fair, the Heck Stick has become one of the most successful percussion add-ons in the history of Schlagwerk Percusssion. Whether on its own, or combined with the Side Kick, word of the new Cajon "Hi-Hat" and its wide-ranging benefits has quickly spread. Thanks to its two height settings, the Cajon is now compatible with CP 403 (with a slightly lower seat height). What's more, the new height setting also allows a lower playing position with a Cajon of conventional seat height; allowing even more playing techniques to be used to great effect. Height adjustment is of course possible, regardless of whether the Heck Stick is positioned on the right or left-hand side.
