László Tömösközi

Being considered the most creative young percussionist of the Hungarian music scene, László Tömösközi is without any doubt one of the outstanding and highly sought-after characters of the Amadinda Percussion Group generation. He pursues a wide range of activities as a soloist, chamber musician, composer and arranger, appearing at several major musical venues and festivals.

He has toured extensively across Europe, China and Taiwan, performed at prestigious festivals like BBC Proms, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Prague Spring, Milano Musica Festival, Janacek May, Beijing Musicathlon, Melos Ethos Festival, Ostrava Days, Taipei International Percussion Convention, Festival Internacional de Musica de Espinho, March Music Days, Budapest Spring Festival, International Bartók Seminar and Festival.

As a chamber musician, he has appeared among others with Steve Reich, Michael Jarrell, Bob Becker, Gordon Stout, James Wood, Olivier Latry, György Kurtág, Péter Eötvös, Zoltán Kocsis and also performs regularly with Amadinda Percussion Group. These artists, who he has had the chance of working with, also served as László´s musical role models shaping his credo as a musician.

László has wide and varied musical interests. Besides his affinity for solo and chamber percussion music of the 20th and 21st century, he often makes appearances with singers and bands playing folk and world music. He acts as a constant guest musician for theatre plays at the most distinguished Hungarian theatres, not infrequently within the framework of performances of contemporary music in Budapest, Berlin and Vienna. His personal commitment in the field of contemporary music shows itself in his work in UMZE Chamber Ensemble, Ostravska Banda and MuPaTh (Music-Performance-Art-Theatre) Company, which he is one of the founding members of.

Following his father´s footsteps as a drummer, the Hungarian-born musician started his percussion studies in 1990, which he pursued under the guidance of Aurél Holló and Zoltán Rácz, both members of the world famous Amadinda Percussion Group. His outstanding talent soon made the apprentice a colleague. He has fond memories of his academic years spent under the lasting influence of Amadinda, turning him into a highly qualified and versatile musician. In recognition of his excellence, the Liszt Academy admitted him to its teaching faculty in the very same year he achieved his Master's Degree.

The first accolade he won was the Second Prize of the National Percussion Competition of Colleges in 1999. His percussion ensemble Mondo Quartet was then awarded the Ari Kupsus Artistic Scholarship in 2005 and the Special Prize of the Japanese Embassy at the International Percussion Quartet Competition in Luxembourg. He was one of the four Music Academy students who received the Citi Scholarship awarded by Citibank for his exceptional results in 2007. As a performer, he won the Junior Talent Award at the Contemporary Music Festival in 2009. In 2011, László Tömösközi won an Annie Fischer Scholarship commissioned by the Hungarian Ministry of Education. Each year, these scholarships are awarded to ten talented young musicians by a board of distinguished experts.

László's repertoire spans from classical transcriptions to contemporary electroacoustic compositions. He has performed the Hungarian premieres of solo and chamber works by composers like Edgard Varése, Olivier Messiaen, Alan Hovhaness, John Cage, Steve Reich, Louis Andriessen, Tan Dun, Toshio Hosokawa, Gordon Stout, Kevin Volans, David Lang, Anna Ignatowicz, Don Womack and John Psathas. Moreover, he has also participated in numerous radio, TV and CD recordings for such labels as Hungaroton, Warner Classics, BMC and Sony Records. His most recent contribution can be heard on an album released by Mutable Music. Titled 'Ostravska Banda On Tour 2010', it contains percussion trios written by Petr Kotik and Bernhard Lang.

László´s yearly schedule includes about 40 concerts and 40 theatre plays.
