Born in 1981 in Bregenz, Austria, Claudio started playing percussion at the age of seven. He was trained as a classical percussionist at the Vorarlberg Conservatory for Music in Austria and received his Bachelor of Arts with distinction in 2004.
In 2004, he started his private studies with the renowned international percussion artist - maestro Hakim Ludin. Under Hakim Ludin´s wing he learned the language and the art of playing hand percussion. In 2008, the product of the student/maestro relationship developed into the founding of the innovative duo program called Percussion Discussion. Due to his intensive work with Hakim Ludin, Claudio has developed a comprehensive repertoire and a large amount of hand and finger techniques for different framedrums, Afrocuban and Afrobrazilian drums and Indian drums.
Always striving for improvement Claudio studied with great musicians like Luis Conte, Karuna Murthy, Juan-Carlos Melian, Steve Smith, Swapan Chaudhuri, Lenny Castro, Alex Acuña, Richie Gajate-Garcia, Cepillo and Rubem Dantas.
Claudio performs in a wide range of musical styles with his current ensembles: Tevana, Nadear, Ragga Gröndal & The Icelandic Folk Ensemble, Expeditie Flamenco, Soulcafé, World of Strings. He has worked with many different artists including Peter Herbert, Phil Maturano, Konstantin Wecker, Peter Madsen, Daniel Pezzotti and Mamadou Diabate; and has been invited to perform at well-known festivals like Reykjavik Jazz Festival, Percussion Festival Telfs, Flamenco Biennale Netherlands, Airwaves Iceland and many more.
Besides touring live, he has recorded eight studio albums with his current projects and appears as a special guest on Hakim Ludin’s instructional DVDs „Modern Percussionist vol. 5 and vol. 6“. Claudio is in great demand as a percussion instructor and has given workshops at several prestigious music institutions such as the „Drummer´s Institute Düsseldorf“ and „The Austrian Percussion Camp“, etc.
Claudio now resides in Berlin where he is continually working to reach new levels musically and artistically.
Percussionist and drummer
Witnessing Hakim Ludin´s “One World Percussion” solo concert for the very first time in 1999 induced me to buy a Schlagwerk Frame Drum. The vibrant sound and the aesthetic appeal of Schlagwerk instruments have fascinated and inspired me ever since. Schlagwerk Frame Drums – especially Pandariq and Free Hand Drum – and 2inOne Cajons play an extraordinarily important part in our “Percussion Discussion” duo performances.
